My mate Mirko's 32nd

Putting my fantastic alliteration in the title to one side, we were in Brisbane to celebrate my friend Mirko's 32nd birthday. Sue had organised a surprise party at their home in the Sunshine Coast, so we borrowed Laura's mum's car and headed up the Bruce Highway. It was a really gloomy, threatening day, though as the picture of the Ettamogah Pub (taken as Laura drove past at 110km/h with me hanging out the window) it did lighten a bit as we got closer.

I'd had a bit of fun with Mirko on the drive up, by calling him to wish him a happy birthday. When he asked about the driving noises he could hear in the background I told him we were on the bus on our way to the shops in Sydney - which he believed (mustn't have heard too many Sydney buses). But the joke was looking like it might be on me - we were running fairly late and I was having visions of wrecking everything that Susan had planned.

As it turned out we got there in plenty of time, it was pretty shocked at how many people were there. I knew a few people, but there were a lot of others I'd never met.

One of the more interesting things of the day was the behaviour of Mirko's Dad. Mirko's Dad is usually a straight talking, no bullshit kind of guy but today he was a doting, baby-talking regular granddad. Definitely a side of him I've never seen before.

Despite the rain it was a great BBQ and as best as I could tell everyone had a good time.

The part got smaller and smaller until the only people left were us and a few old uni mates. Once Matt received his mysterious phone call and rode his motorbike into the night, the party was officially over. We stayed up for a bit to chat and catch up, and Mirko introduced me to his take on latte art. Fuggeddabout fancy pouring techniques and microbubbles - Mirko's technique involves adding the chocolate to the top by flicking his wrist holding the shaker in an "artistic" manner, then naming the creation what he thinks it most resembles. Here are the masterpieces from that night - I think most of them are called "sandstorm":

Eatin' steaks in Brissie

Laura and I headed up to Brisbane for Mirko's surprise 32nd bithday (he was OS for his 30th, and Angelina was born a few days before his 31st).

Dave picked us up in his Audi (man I love that car), and after taking care of some odds and ends, we ended up at the Breakky Creek Hotel, famous for its premium steaks. I've been know to eat a steak or two in my time, so I was always going to be well satisfied.

The food was fabulous and the renos looked pretty good, but a minor complaint nevertheless; - why oh why would they scream out over the PA the names of punters whose dinner was ready? Haven't they heard of those vibating tags that most every other similar restaurant uses?

Dinner at John and Colleen's

Our friends John and Colleen had moved to a spectacular apartment in Point Piper (as you do) and hosted a lavish dinner with a group of their friends (as you do).

The view from their apartment was spectacular, the food and wine was great, and the company matched. Highlight was John's new trainset (well if you ask him it was anyway).

Good eating at Randwick

Dave (my brother) was in town for the races and we caught up with him and a couple of his mates at The Royal in Randwick then went onto dinner at Thai-riffic.

The Royal was a great pub, made all the more so by the lack of smoke. After a couple of drinks at the pub we walked down and ordered a feast of Thai food.

The restaurant was stacking up the chairs behind us when we had managed to finished all of the wine and food. Royce and I headed home while the boys went off to sample some of the Sydney nightlife. Arriving at the races before midday was never going to happen anyway.

Walking through the 'Cross on a Saturday arvo is usually quite interesting, but was made even more interesting because of the chalk art on the footpaths. Ok, so there were no Julian Beever's amongst the artists, but it was a stinking hot day and they were giving it a shot.

Altair EC Dinner

Tonight was a celebration for two outgoing members of the EC (Joe and Daniel), and I suppose a welcoming of some new members. Dinner was at Jimmy's favourite the Iguana Bar, which, with the amount of alcohol consumed, was ideally located only a very short walk from our apartments.

I was a little disappointed with my meal on this occasion - Laura and I had eaten here a few times and it was usually not-too-shabby. Well as long as they get it right in a month or so for my birthday then all will be forgiven.

Mardi Gras

Hint: BYO Glitter and Milk Crate.

This year Royce and I left it way too late to get to the Mardi Gras and see anything. People had been there since the morning setting up chairs and stocking up on milk crates, which they later sold off for a healthy profit! The parade had just started when we arrived and there was no chance of seeing any of it, we tried to shuffle down Flinders Street and got caught in a crush of people all dancing on the spot, making it quite hard to mauver around. I managed to duck and weave my way out before the crowd collapsed as people shoved to get through. I got out the other end, but there was no Royce behind me.

I had lost him in a crowd of sweaty half-naked men and very pretty boys dressed as women.

It was almost an hour before I'd found him again, looking a little worse for wear and with a look that screamed 'we are out of here'! The Sydney Mardi Gras isn't for the faint hearted! There are only a couple of shots as we had to protect the camera - and ourselves - and we couldn't see a thing!

We took refuge in a Vietnamese restaurant down the road.

Ronnie and Elona

It was Uncle Ronnie and Aunty Elona's 25th Anniversary; they met and lived in Sydney so it was a perfect chance to drive down from Brisbane and spend a week reminiscing. They walked the streets, rode the ferries and spent their evenings listening to Jazz at the Basement - a favourite haunt.

Royce and I had them over for a drink to see our apartment and then it was a quick train ride to the Art House Hotel - the old school of arts building dating back to 1836. We enjoyed a lovely meal at the Dome restaurant and talked till we were the last to leave. It was a wonderful evening and I'm glad we were there to celebrate their anniversary with them.

The third photo is one of my favourites; it captures Ron and Elona perfectly!

David Byrne concert

I discovered Talking Heads fairly late in their career - so late in fact they had well and truly broken up. I had just moved out of home and bought the double CD "Sand in the Vaseline", which was a greatest hits collection I bought ostensibly to listen to the songs I already knew. What transpired was that I found that I was drawn more to the less known, less radio-friendly songs. I played these CDs over and over again, to the chagrin of my friend Matt who's place I was staying at. Though that was over 12 years ago, I'm pretty sure he must have forgiven me by now.

A few years back David Byrne performed at the Sydney Festival - thankfully Laura was able to get us (free) tickets through work (thanks Grant). I'd heard that these days he only did his solo stuff, so I was really, really pleased when he performed mostly Talking Heads material. I had pretty much given up on hearing my favourite song live, and so was pretty damn excited when halfway through the set "This Must Be the Place" started up.

Fast forward a few years and I was really stoked to see in the entertainment section of the paper that David Byrne was coming to the Enmore, with a show billed as a fusion of greatest hits and some new material. Laura and I got our tickets and despite last minute complications, made it to the venue just before the opening act started their "performance". I should have loved these guys, their influences being Talking Heads and They Might Be Giants among others, but they were just too weird and lacking the polish that band who do oddball well pull off.

When David Byrne and band came out (the batteries in my camera were dead) they were all in uniform - dark brown trousers and the same dark brown shirts, though David was the only one whose shirt was tucked in. With his white spiky hair I guess it made him look kinda small.

The show was amazing - he perfomed many of my favourites (though "This Must Be the Place" was way too early in the set") - and must have made it though 20-odd songs. They did 2 encore's and received 3 standing ovations, the last of which went for close to 10 minutes. You could tell from his slightly suprised and embarrassed (yet pleased) look that the voracity of the applause took him by surpise.

It was an absolutely brilliant concert - I feel truly priveledged to have been there.

Our friends on level 15 invite us up quite a bit - but I usually forget to take the camera. Tonight would be an exception.

I love Jimmy and Sue's place - much bigger than ours and facing North - spectacularly toward the harbour, Opera House, Bridge - all the main sites.

Food and wine were great and we chatted a long time into the night.

Well not in Ireland, but at the Ireland's. Merilyn and Andy hosted Laura and I and our other friends Ann and Leigh at their place for dinner. Their place was really cool, with quite a bit of reno work going on but it was coming together really well (must have been all that architectural advice I'd given Andy when he worked at BVN).

Not only that, but Andy cooked up a storm on the BBQ and spent much of the evening speaking in French. What a multi-talented guy!

After dinner and desert Leigh raided the boot of his car we he had a frisbee and assorted footballs that we were able to kick around the street - apologies to any of Merilyn and Andy's neighbours who had cars/front gardens damaged...

Lunch at Cronulla

Laura's brother Dave was in town and popped in for a visit. We decided to head down the coast to Cronulla to see the spray and get some lunch. The weather closed in and it turned out to be an incredibly gloomy day, though that didn't seem to deter the many beach goers.

A couple of lads were allowing themselves to get smashed by the waves that were breaking over the rock pools - I suspected that the kids were (in bad taste considering recent events) playing a game of "Tsunami".

For lunch we went to the Hog's Breath Cafe. I have to say that I've been disappointed with their food in the past but after what they dished up today all is forgiven - it was superb!

Jackie and (big) Kev's engagement party

Look, I really don't want to start anything by this, but I can't help to call him big Kev. Not that he's anything like Big Kev (of "I'm Excited!!!" fame), but he is just a tall, strong looking fellow.

Anywho, Jackie and Kev threw this ripper engagement party at their local curry house where they shouted 60-odd of us to a dinner banquet. The meals were delicious and it was a really fun night. The guy that was sitting across from us just kept cracking me up - his voice was a dead ringer for that comedian Dave Hughes.

The bad news was that now Jackie and (big) Kev will have to pull off an amazing night at their reception if it is to trump their engagement party effort. Fantastic night guys!

Oz day ride to Stanwell Park

As Laura and I have done more than once in the past, we took the opportunity of a public holiday to ride our bikes through the Royal National Park and on to Stanwell Park. The ride was quite spirited (especially after we were joined by a group of boy-racers about 3/4s the way through the park). We stopped for some photos and to enjoy the view, then made our way down to Stanwell Park to enjoy lunch. Seeing as it was Australia Day, I enjoyed a nice lamb roll with a warm mustard sauce. Now that's good eatin'!

When we got home we caught the tail end of an aerobatics display, which Laura managed to get some pics of from our balcony.

Final touches on my PVR v1.0

It seems like years ago now, but when I retired my old PC I fist made it into a "test" linux machine, and then was enamoured of the idea to turn it into a DIY media centre.

After many, many, many late nights and wasted weekends trying to get linux to support a HDTV card, and then get MythTV to also support said card, and then getting said card to actually work, I finally gave up. The software that came with the tv card only runs on Windows, so a quick rebuild, install of Windows, and installation of the proprietary software that came with the card (all up less than 2 hours), the Personal Video Recorder was working.

Ok, it is still quite buggy, crashes often, and my 80GB HDD really isn't big enough, but the quality of the recordings and the ease of use and the fact that I can programme the "video recorder" over the Internet makes it all worthwhile. Hopefully soon I can also realise my dream and add music and pictures so that it is a true media centre.
